George Merck Art Collection (GMAC) was founded in 2013 by American collector and philanthropist George Frederick Mead Merck. Consisting of over a hundred works of art, GMAC is considered one of the most important collections of Light and Space in the southeast. Other focuses in the collection include Minimalism and Emerging Contemporary Art. GMAC is professionally managed and advised by Anna Valverde.

In addition to Merck’s role as a passionate collector, he is also an active patron and donor. Merck currently serves on two institutional boards: The Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art in Washington D.C. since 2017 and at the Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach since 2023. Merck has chaired the three most recent Archives of American Art’s annual galas (2019, 2022 and 2023), resulting in three of their most successful raises to date. He has also been instrumental in increasing engagement with a younger generation of philanthropists, archive acquisition efforts for several artists and the creation of the ARTICULATED podcast series at AAA. Additionally, Merck actively serves on the National Gallery of Art’s Collector Committee, as Chairman of the Board at AAA and on the Campaign Leadership Committee for The Smithsonian. He is the youngest trustee and board chair in the history of AAA, as well as the youngest trustee in the history of Norton Museum of Art.
